Understanding FATG Levels: The Key to Long-Lasting Picture Mounts

When choosing materials for framing and display, the technical specifications often dictate the lifespan of your artwork. One of the most critical, yet overlooked, metrics is the FATG level. At Mount Amount, we believe in full transparency, which is why we provide the specific FATG levels for every picture mount we offer.

Here is everything you need to know about what these levels mean and why they are vital for your framing projects.

What are FATG Levels?

FATG stands for the Fine Art Trade Guild. This international organization sets the standards for the framing industry to ensure consistency and quality. FATG levels categorize mountboards based on their construction, chemical purity, and how they protect the artwork they house.

The levels are generally divided into four categories:

  1. Museum (Level 1): The highest quality, cotton-based, and completely acid-free.

  2. Conservation (Level 2): High-quality wood pulp that has been chemically treated to be acid-free.

  3. Standard/Whitecore (Level 3): Ideal for general framing where long-term archival storage isn't the primary goal.

  4. Budget (Level 4): Basic boards for temporary displays.

Why are FATG Levels Important?

The FATG level tells you exactly how the mountboard will react to your artwork over time. Using the wrong level can lead to irreversible damage.

  • Acid Neutralization: Higher FATG levels ensure the board won't turn yellow or "burn" the edges of your print with acid.

  • Color Permanence: Higher-rated boards use pigments that won't fade or bleed when exposed to light or moisture.

  • Structural Integrity: Quality levels ensure the board remains flat and provides a crisp, clean bevel edge when cut.

How Do FATG Levels Protect Your Art?

It all comes down to chemistry. Low-quality boards contain lignin, a natural component of wood that turns into acid over time.

  • How it works: FATG Level 1 and 2 boards either contain no lignin (cotton) or have been treated with calcium carbonate to "buffer" the board.

  • The Result: This buffer creates an alkaline environment that actively neutralizes pollutants in the air, preventing the "foxing" (brown spots) often seen on old, poorly framed photographs.

Why We Provide FATG Levels for Every Mount

We know that every project has a different requirement, whether you are framing a child's drawing or a rare collectible. To help you make the right choice:

  • Total Transparency: You don't have to guess the quality. We list the FATG level clearly on every product page.

  • Tailored Selection: By knowing the level, you can match the board to the value and intended lifespan of your artwork.

  • Professional Standards: We adhere to the Fine Art Trade Guild’s strict guidelines to ensure you receive a product that meets global industry benchmarks.
